| Job Description | Instructor Description: Sierra Nevada Journeys is looking for professional instructors with experience working with students in 4th-12th grade. We are looking to hire instructors on a contract basis to help us with our outdoor field programs, starting in March 2010. All of our classes are hands-on science and adventure based. Instructors will be responsible for leading a trail group of 12-15 students through a variety of field based activities (problem solving, leadership development, earth science, watershed science, natural systems etc.) during ½ day and full day field trips to local natural areas. Contracting with us is a great way to build your skills in: environmental education, working with young people, teaching science, and facilitating team-building experiences. | Qualifications | • A passion for working with students and making a difference! • The ability to take the initiative, think entrepreneurially, and work independently • Experience developing, teaching, and leading outdoor environmental education programs and/or classroom instruction (preferably science based), teaching credential preferred but not required • Strong oral and written communication skills • Experience working with children of diverse ages and cultures • Able to get along with a wide variety of students, teachers, community members and employees • Ability to pass background check • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and hike 4-5 miles with a backpack • Ability to work with a flexible schedule, including on weekdays • Current CPR a must, First aid, WFR or WFA preferred • MUST have a positive “can do” attitude • Ability to attend a training (probably on a Saturday) • Personal means of transportation (ability to drive to field site) • Fluency in Spanish a plus! |
