Program Description The Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School is a residential outdoor education program serving Southern California students, and specializing in hands-on learning of ecosystem science concepts. The Outdoor Science School operates at two gorgeous locations in the mountains and on the coast north of Los Angeles, California.

Job Description Teach science to fifth and sixth grade students, using experiential, hands-on teaching techniques in the outdoors. The curriculum includes science concepts such as wildlife habitat, plant adaptation, ecosystem comparison, basic astronomy, geology, soils, human ecology, science process skills, etc. Outdoor Science Teachers will also lead evening programs, provide occasional student supervision, and train and supervise volunteer cabin leaders. Other duties common to residential outdoor education programs may be assigned as needed. All duties are scheduled to be completed within a 40 hour work week.

Qualifications BA/BS in life science (biology, botany, zoology, etc.), natural resources (emphasis in interpretation or education), environmental science, relevant physical science (geology, astronomy, etc.) or other comparable fields. Course work should include several life and earth science courses, and some field experience. Previous outdoor teaching experience required. First Aid/CPR certification. Must be physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills. Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired, but not required. Willing to work irregular hours.
Salary $21,565 per year, equivalent to $645 per week
