| Program Description | The Outdoor School is a four & five-day residential science school in which students come to live and learn together. We are looking for energetic people to lead 5th and 6th grade students on experiences through the San Bernardino National Forest. The Outdoor Science School strives to: • Teach the California State standards Curriculum for 5th-6th grade students • Instill an appreciation of the environment • Develop a sense of responsibility for conservation & preservation of natural resources • Provide a social living experience where the students take responsibility for various community living activities • Encourage students to develop communication skills and self-confidence • Provide a comfortable environment for students and teachers to learn & interact • Provide personal growth opportunities for both the staff we employ and the students we serve Trail Guides lead groups of 22-28 students on various trails and initiatives where direct experience and observation provide unique learning opportunities. Examples of trails include Survival Training, Botany, Ecology, Climbing wall and low ropes, Astronomy and Evening Expedition. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience with program development for youth organizations. Typical duties include: Leading various trails, teaching science curriculum standards, teaching social living skills, leading environmental games and group initiatives, assisting in songs and campfires, maintaining program and classroom facilities, and more. Trail guides are also required to fulfill cabin leader duties, which include acting as over-night cabin counselor, as needed. |

Instructs students in trail groups according to Thousand Pines Outdoor Science School curriculum 2. Facilitates operations related to TPOSS 3. Performs duties and/or participates in activities including: a. Leading various meetings and/or program elements (See program handbook) b. Outdoor Science School program and curriculum c. Camper Safety and Emergency Response Additional Functions 1. Attends TPOSS Department team meetings 2. Provides supportive leadership for TPOSS Cabin Leaders 3. Performs the responsibilities of a Cabin Leader when necessary (not optional) 4. Assists TPOSS in any other areas as needed Major Competency Areas 1. Excellent teaching skills 2. Excellent team support skills 3. Strong communication skills 4. Demonstrates ability to model desired behaviors on a consistent basis 5. Ability to discipline when necessary 6. Maintains punctuality Qualifications 1. Minimum of Bachelors Degree (educational emphasis preferred) 2. Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certifications (condition to being hired, must possess or be signed up for a class. Cert needs to last through the season) 3. Pass a drug test and fingerprinting scan 4. Full agreement with TPOSS mission and values statements 5. Valid driver’s license or state issued I.D. Physical Demands 1. Abilities sufficient to carry out the essential functions of the job including frequent and sometimes strenuous hiking and working in an outdoor setting during four seasons in all weather conditions 2. | Qualifications | Trail Guide Qualifications: • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent • Bachelor’s Degree • Experience working with children in areas such as recreation, camping, classroom or outdoor school experience, other related experience, or a combination of these. • Effective teaching and communication skills • Positive attitude and a willingness to support other staff and the program. • Interest in education of 5th and 6th grade students • Full agreement with Thousand Pines Outdoor Science School’s mission and values statements • Great relational skills • C.P.R. and First Aid Certificate • Multiple positive references • A background check that is clear to work with children • Comply with and pass routine drug testing • Complete and clear fingerprinting scan |
