Friday 8-10 pm Starwatch with Spencer Nielsen from Sierra Outdoor School The granite rocks of Tamarack Flat provide an ideal location for star gazing! Join Spencer Nielsen and other Sierra Outdoor School staff for an informal star watch. We'll practice reading star maps, learn new constellations, and use a telescope to view galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. Bring questions, stories or constellations to share, and binoculars!
Saturday 7:00 am Bird Walk with birder extraordinaire Karyn "Kestrel" OHearn. Bring binoculars (if you have them) and meet at the registration area
Tamarack Flat Campground. Tamarack Flat is closer to most outdoor schools
than Yosemite Valley, and it is reserved exclusively for this AEOE conference!
Via Hwy 120: after the Big Oak Flat Entrance Station (approx.
8 miles) turn left (East) onto Tioga Road (Hwy 120 East). In a half mile
you’ll pass Yosemite Institute’s Crane Flat campus on the left.
Just 3 miles later look for the campground road entrance on the right (it’s
hard to see...) Follow the road about 3 miles down to the registration table.
Via Hwy 140: turn left (West) onto Big Oak Flat Road (look for
the sign that says “To 120”) instead of continuing on into the
Valley. In approx. 8 miles turn right (East) onto Tioga Road (Hwy 120 E.)
and follow the directions in italics above. NOTE:
State Route 140 entrance to Yosemite is closed due to a rock slide this spring - as of 8/18/06 it is open for limited times during the day, with plans to open full time in September - check the web for updates before taking 140. The CalTrans website to check to for road condition updates is http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi (enter the Highway number - 140, to check for conditions), or check the Park Service Road and Weather Conditions page. Fortunately, there are still two other routes from the west: Highway 120 to the north and 41 to the south.
Via Hwy 41: Come down to the Valley floor, go 2 miles and take
the left that says “To 120”. Then go 3 miles and go right
onto Big Oak Flat Road (“To 120”). In approx. 8 miles turn right
(East) onto Tioga Road (Hwy 120 E.) and follow the directions in italics
above.
Via Hwy 395: Turn onto Hwy 120 (Tioga Road) by Lee Vining’s
famous Mobil station. About 10 miles after White Wolf, look for the campground
entrance road on the left. Follow the road down to the registration table.
If you are arriving after dark please drive slowly on park roads, and watch
for wildlife.
Map of Yosemite Campgrounds showing Tamarack Flat
More about Tamarack Flat: Tamarack Flat is in Lodgepole Pine/Red
Fir forest with granite outcroppings and boulders and Tamarack Creek, which
runs right
through the campground area.
There is a trailhead at the campground to the top of El Capitan on the Old
Big Oak
Flat
road,
which
was a stage road that entered Yosemite Valley.
It is a primitive, dry campground (pit toilets, no running water), so come prepared.
Click here for the NPS campground
information on Tamarack Flat The campground is closed to the public in
October when we are there, and we have already reserved and paid for it, so
no need to make a reservation - camping fees are included in conference cost.
Carpooling is encouraged - parking is limited at the
group campgrounds, and the park entrance fee is $20/vehicle. Click
here for an online ride share forum if you can offer
a ride to others, or if you need to find a ride.
What to Bring:
Tamarack Flat is at 6300’ so bring cool weather gear for nights and
mornings, but days will probably be warm. Bring all your camping gear plus
plates and
utensils. Food: bring your own breakfasts (if you need more than a bagel
to get going)
and lunches. Bring your camera, instruments, firewood to share, binoculars,
flashlight, and other natty accoutrements. Tamarack Flat is a primitive
campground which means there are no flush toilets or running water (except
for Tamarack
Creek... maybe).
Water: please bring more than you’ll need and a water
filter if you have one. Low Impact Camping: no soap or food scraps in the creek!
We pack everything out. Our goal is to leave the area cleaner than we find
it.
Park Entrance Fee: Don't forget your Golden Eagle pass or
$20 for
the park entrance fee. Carpool!
