Teaching Outside the Lines

Location/What to Bring


Directions to Hess Kramer:

Map to Hess Kramer or do your own MapQuest map with their address: 11495 East Pacific Coast Highway; Malibu, CA 90265-9796

From the south and east: Take 101 N to Malibu Canyon Road or Kanan-Dume Road (recommended). Take Malibu Canyon or Kanan-Dume (best) West to Hwy 1. Take Hwy 1 North past Pepperdine, Leo Carrillo State Park, and the Los Angeles/Ventura County line. You will soon come to Neptune’s Net Restaurant on the right. Turn Right at Yerba Buena Road. Camp Hess Kramer is on the left side of the road. (See directions below)

From the north: Take 101 South to the Hwy 1 South exit (Oxnard). Follow the signs and stay on Hwy 1 (use your own map if needed). After reaching the coast, you will pass Sycamore Canyon State Park, and approximately 3-5 miles past the park you will see Neptune’s Net restaurant on your left. Turn left onto Yerba Buena road. Camp Hess Kramer is on the left side of the road. (See directions below)

Final Directions: You are almost there when you see a restaurant/fish & chips place on PCH (Highway 1) called Neptune's Net. Turn on Yerba Buena Road, where Neptune's Net is on the southeast corner. Camp Hess Kramer will be on the left side of the road a short distance uphill. Turn left into Gate #2. (There should be AEOE signs directing you) Go past the back side of the dining hall, curve left, go down a little hill and follow directions to park.

What to Bring:

Gear: Sleeping bag/pillow/blanket (bedding not provided in dorms), pajamas (dorms!), tent (if camping), flashlight, alarm clock/watch, towel, toiletries, warm weather clothing, sunscreen/hat, swim wear (for the ocean), cool weather clothing, rain gear–it does occasionally rain in Southern California...

Tools: Map–ours is just a guide! Money (cash or checks) for books, Acorn Naturalists, AEOE merchandise (tee shirts, tote bags, water bottles, mugs, recycled materials frisbees and pencils), City Safari photo fundraiser, and auctions; notebook and writing instrument for all the new ideas you’ll be learning; tape recorder for stories and songs; information on your program (brochures, etc.), job announcements, resumes for the job fair,other items to show off your program, such as journals (also for the journal swap), songbooks, etc.; a mug for beverages; stories and songs to share; a new program tee shirt to swap; earplugs... Technu - if you go exploring, there is Poison Oak!

Toys: camera, binoculars, bird books, wildflower books, other field guides, musical instruments (drum circles Friday and Saturday night after bands, several music workshops, and other music jams often!), swim suit/towel (a short walk to the beach), surfboards/boogie boards/wet suits (famous surf at County Line)

NO cooking allowed on site (so don’t bother bringing cooking gear with your camping gear); NO pets; NO drugs: people visibly intoxicated with drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave the conference.
