Bertram Chatham  works in the field of community services and has directed several youth agencies.  Bertram has become one of the most sought after staff trainers on the West Coast, consulting with both Fortune 500 companies and regional summer camps.  Additionally, he has been a featured speaker at the ACA Cal-West Camping Conference, the Western Association of Independent Camps Annual Conference, and the Sierra Club's Youth in Wilderness Conference. Mr. Chatham was a speaker at the 1995 AEOE statewide conference at Foothill Horizons as well.

His keynote presentation at the 2005 AEOE Statewide Spring Conference will be on "The Art of Welcome."


Background:

Bertram works in the field community services and has directed several youth agencies including the Stockton Boys & Girls Club and the University of the Pacific’s YMCA. He has also served as the Executive Director of two Camp Fire Boy & Girls councils, the Sacramento-Sierra Council and the Central Valley Council, where he was awarded the "Luther Halsey Gulick Award", the highest honor bestowed by a Camp Fire council. Additionally, as a result of his work in the field of youth development, he was named San Joaquin County’s “Outstanding Youth Services Professional of 1996”.

Bertram spent many happy summers as a camper at the Community of the Great Commission (CGC), the summer camp owned by the Christian Church of Northern California/Nevada. Later he became a CGC camp counselor & director and finally served for several years on the Outdoor Ministries Committee.

Bertram has 30 years of professional leadership serving camps in the western states and, from 1989 until 2003, served as the Director of Camps for the University of the Pacific. He also directed the University’s Office of Community Involvement, a nationally recognized effort which seeks to develop student citizen leaders by integrating community service into academic courses.

He has over five years of service on the board of directors of the American Camp Association-Northern California Section and is currently chair of the education committee. In January of 2003, Bertram was elected to the national board of the American Camp Association.

Bertram has become one of the most sought after youth-worker trainers on the West Coast, consulting with schools, community-based organizations and working with over twenty camps each summer. He has been a featured speaker/presenter at the Cal-West Camping Conference, the Western Association of Independent Camps Annual Conference, the Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators Annual Conference, the Sierra Club's Youth in Wilderness Conference, and, most recently, American Camp Association’s National Conference.

What’s next for Bertram? He has developed and is marketing a line of camp staff training tools called “The Camp Game”. And in his spare time, he’s creating of a chain of family-oriented seasonal Halloween retail stores. Look out for a “Halloween Emporium” near you!
