Solar Fountain Workshop April 15 th, 2005, 10:30 to 3:30

FREE! for outdoor environmental school (AEOE) staff. FREE set of Solar Module/Pump is only for AEOE schools. Workshop attendees must also be registered for the AEOE Conference.

Solar Powered Water Fountains provide attractive interactive demonstrations of solar energy. When students walk past the solar panel the water, somewhat magically, stops flowing; when students rotate the solar panel toward the sun, the water flows faster and higher. Fountains can also create a peaceful cooling oasis at a school site.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to design and build solar powered water fountains. Elements of the workshop include selecting a water pump, sizing the solar electric panel, how to design and build the fountain structure—basin size and composition, height of fountain structure, water flow rate, materials, soldering copper pipe, and outdoor electrical wiring.

There is room for up to 16 participants in the workshop. Solar Schoolhouse will provide up to 8 solar fountain kits, which include a 30-50 watt solar electric module, a DC submersible water pump, and the copper water structure. We strongly encourage that people participate in pairs, ideally a pair being two teachers from the same school, so that you can build the fountain infrastructure in the workshop and then install it at your outdoor school.

Take Home: Participants will receive a guide to solar fountain and pond building. We will provide each participating school with a solar electric module and so that they will have the equipment to install a pond or solar fountain at their outdoor school site.

Please bring a sack lunch, clothes that you can work in, and sun protection.

Instructors: Hal Aronson, Tor Allen – Rahus-Solar Schoolhouse www.solarschoolhouse.org
