Here's a really helpful one: You may find something in your
search, but when you go to the page, it is very long and you can't find the
item on the page
easily - use the "Find" command in your browser menu! (Your
browser is the program you use to view webpages, probably Internet Explorer
or Netscape or maybe Firefox or Safari or Opera or something
like that) The "Find" command is usually under the "Edit" menu,
and probably has a keyboard command of "control-F" on a PC, or "command-F" on
a Mac. That will take you right to what you are looking for on a page! Hit "Find
Next"
to see where else it occurs on the page until you've found all occurrences.
Things to keep in mind for more effective searching:
Try the navigation pull-down menus first! For example, if you are looking
for jobs, don't do a search for jobs, just go to our jobs page!
(If you do a search, everything with the word jobs in it will show up, including
archived job announcements)
Spelling counts! If you do not get results, check your spelling.
Use synonyms - for example, if you aren't finding any results with "college," try "university."
Information on pdf files will now show up in a search - but if you know
something was in a newsletter or conference packet, try looking at the newsletters page
or the conference
history page to find it.
Use the Advanced Search if you need
a result with ALL words
(any order) or an EXACT PHRASE - the usual Google techniques (putting
+ in front of each word or using quotation marks around an exact phrase)
don't work with
the simple Atomz search. Be sure to select the type of search you want.
I'll answer right away - I'll find it for you, or add it if it
isn't on the site and should be, and let you know where it is!
I get reports from both Atomz and FreeFind on what searches have been
run, and the results, and I try to add information to the site based on what
people
have
been looking for, so if you don't find something right away, come back and
try
again! (or
you could
and
ask that it be added to the website) - Webmaster
