Program Description: Coastal Mountain Youth Academy (CMYA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an educational and therapeutic program for adolescents that have struggled in the traditional high school setting. CMYA strives to make a difference in the lives of “at-promise” youth by addressing and supporting their needs and promoting a healthy, drug-free, learning environment. “At-promise” youth are those who struggle with alcohol and drug use, defiance, truancy, poor academics, abuse, juvenile detention and probation. To achieve its objectives, CMYA offers: academic curriculum, therapeutic counseling, experiential education via a 21 day outdoor adventure component, career and technical education, community service and transitional practices.
Students will participate in a 22- day adventure program to gain hard and soft skills that help them function effectively in their daily lives. The adventure program provides teaching ground for hard skills of backpacking, camping, rock climbing, and expeditionary canoeing, and soft skills of conflict resolution, communication, and teambuilding. Students learn about the natural environment and develop habits of environmental stewardship. Through solo time, journaling and reflection, students apply the challenges and accomplishments of wilderness travel to their daily lives.
