Part Time Naturalist

Program Description: The ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER in Newport Beach provides hands-on outdoor environmental education programs for Kindergarten – 7th grade students. The "ENC" was established in 1972, and since then it has provided outdoor education programs for thousands of students each year. Children participate in hands-on programs in our 3.5 acre outdoor classroom based on the curriculum standards developed by the California Department of Education. Job Description: The Part Time Naturalist is responsible for teaching outdoor environmental and social science education programs to children on some weekdays and Saturdays. The Naturalist’s goals are to encourage students’ awareness and appreciation of the environment, broaden students’ knowledge of science concepts, and foster students’ commitment to the protection of the natural environment. Join the BEST EE staff in the County, and work in and around the ENC’s highly anticipated new state-of-the-art learning facility designed to achieve the highest level of “green” building certification – a LEED Platinum Certification – the first of its kind in Orange County.

Qualifications:

  1. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate flexibility.
  2. Knowledge of California plant and animal life highly desirable.
  3. Knowledge of California Native Americans, as well as local indigenous people highly desirable.
  4. Ability to handle a variety of animals including arthropods and snakes.
  5. Ability to memorize and recall facts, figures, and information.
  6. Ability to move up to fifty pounds and set up equipment.
  7. Ability to hike on trails, and traverse stairs and uneven terrain while carrying equipment.
  8. Ability to make independent decisions and respond to immediate needs of students, emergency situations, and program needs.
  9. Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
  10. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is essential because of limited resources, costs, productivity and quality continuity.
  11. Ability to interact successfully with supervisors, teachers, parents and students.
  12. Fingerprinting for a background check will be required.
  13. Computer (Macintosh and Microsoft Office) experience required or willingness to learn.
  14. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must have own vehicle.
