Naturalist


Program Description: Naturalist facilitates environmental education programs, restoration projects, and activities based upon the organization’s curriculum and participating schools goals in conjunction with Lead Teacher. Sites include California State Parks, and various private and public lands, primarily in Napa and Sonoma Counties. Naturalists should have a passion for teaching children in the outdoors and a commitment to creating a learning atmosphere that is fun, safe, educational, and inclusive of all learning styles. This position is a substitute teaching position with the amount of work fluctuating throughout the school year.

Job Description: Responsibilities:
•Teach and interpret Acorn Soupe field and classroom K-12 curriculum at Lead Teacher’s direction
•Ongoing development of program, activities, and new projects
•Regular meetings with Lead Teacher’s and Program Coordinator
•Reliable transportation to schools and restoration sites
•Maintain safe atmosphere for children and adults at all times and report any hazards to Lead Teacher immediately

Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, geography, or related field or equivalent
•Minimum of 1 year experience conducting outdoor environmental education programs or equivalent experience
•Familiarity of the natural and cultural history of the North Bay Area

Requirements:
•Proven ability to conduct effective programs with K-12 students
•Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to give effective presentations to diverse audiences, and willingness and access to e-mail
•Proven organizational skills
•Ability to work independently and creatively
•Ability to perform physical work in the outdoors and under challenging weather conditions or uneven terrain, including ability to lift 40 pounds
•Ability to multitask by focusing on activities in different areas at the same time
•Ability to work as part of a team in planning and accomplishing projects, yet able to work independently
•Proof of California driver’s license, auto insurance, and your own car to travel to field events
•Current first aid (min. 16 hour course), CPR certification (adult, child, infant)
•Clean record from fingerprint live scan with California Dept of Justice and FBI
•Ability to establish positive and professional rapport with students, teachers, parents, and staff
•Flexibility and sense of humor is a necessity!
