JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Program Director of
the Outdoor School, a naturalist intern will spend 1 week of staff training,
2 weeks observing the program, 2 weeks working one-on-one with naturalist mentors,
2 weeks co-teaching with naturalist mentors, and 2-3 weeks conducting group
hikes on botany, wildlife biology, astronomy, Chumash culture, geology, natural
and environmental history and ecology of the Santa Ynez region.
START DATE ASAP COMPENSATION $78/day plus room & board
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct hikes and lake trips at night and during the day; provide instruction
on botany, wildlife biology, astronomy, Chumash history, geology, natural
and environmental history and ecology of the Santa Ynez region; lead follow
up discussions.
Lead other curriculum activities such as special activities, campfire programs,
visits to the nature center, and writing exercises.
Prepare for hikes and other activities; gather and prepare specimens; produce
slides for instructional programs and demonstrations; set up displays.
Develop curriculum: prepare instructions and maintain inventory for
teacher-led special activities; prepare several different activities for
campfire; review and maintain lesson plans for hikes.
Confer with students, cabin leaders, teachers, and directors about schedule,
behavior problems, health problems, and disabilities.
Perform basic maintenance to camp facilities and equipment; build and maintain
trails; assist with transportation; assist in overall school operation including
food services.
Meet weekly with other Naturalists and directors to discuss overall program
and specific program or individual student issues.
Reside on site during school week and respond to emergency situations 24
hours a day.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of:
Goals and objectives of the environmental school program.
Botany, wildlife biology, astronomy, Chumash history, geology, natural
and environmental history and ecology of the Santa Ynez region
Hiking and trail safety.
First Aid and CPR
Principles and techniques of environmental education and teaching instruction.
Oral and written communications skills.
Ability to:
Provide instruction in various aspects of natural history.
Develop curriculum in natural history.
Plan and lead activities appropriate to age group.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fifth/sixth
grade students, high school cabin leaders, parent chaperones, and teachers.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with
others.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Be present and on time for all scheduled activities.
Become a member of the Rancho Alegre/Outdoor School community; be a good
role model.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be actively pursuing a 4 year degree if a 4-year degree has not been
acquired
Experience in providing instruction to children in a science school or
outdoor education setting.
Work includes
indoor and outdoor environment; subject to hiking, weather conditions, and
dust; on call 24 hours Tuesday-Friday for Outdoor School program; subject to
strenuous physical activity; subject to variable work hours.
SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT Telescopes,
microscopes, lab equipment, and computer skills.
NEEDED ATTRIBUTES Incumbents
in this class must possess a valid driver's license and insurance coverage
as required by Los Padres Council; Social Security card; and proof of employment
eligibility as required by the Dept. of Justice, fingerprint card.
A valid
First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross; a valid C.P.R. certificate
issued by the American Red Cross.
