JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Program Director of The Outdoor School, conduct hikes with groups of students and provide instruction on botany, wildlife biology, astronomy, Chumash culture, geology, natural and environmental history and ecology of the Santa Ynez region.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct hikes and lake trips at night and during the day; provide instruction on botany, wildlife biology, astronomy, Chumash history, geology, natural and environmental history and ecology of the Santa Ynez region; lead follow up discussions.
  2. Lead other curriculum activities such as special activities, campfire programs, visits to the nature center, and writing exercises.
  3. Prepare for hikes and other activities; gather and prepare specimens; produce slides for instructional programs and demonstrations; set up displays.
  4. Develop curriculum: prepare instructions and maintain inventory for teacher-led special activities; prepare several different activities for campfire; review and maintain lesson plans for hikes.
  5. Confer with students, cabin leaders, teachers, and directors about schedule, behavior problems, health problems, and disabilities.
  6. Perform basic maintenance to camp facilities and equipment; build and maintain trails; assist with transportation; assist in overall school operation including food services.
  7. Provide first aid to students; transfer students to hospital in emergency, if needed.
  8. Assist in planning activities in terms of trail and weather conditions and group characteristics.
  9. Meet weekly with other Naturalists and directors to discuss overall program and specific program or individual student issues.
  10. Reside on site during school week and respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Four-year degree in natural history, science, education or related subject.
  2. Two years experience in providing instruction to children in a science school or outdoor education setting.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, VISUAL SKILLS

  1. Able to hike over rough terrain.
  2. Able to hike in daylight or dark.
  3. Able to tolerate exposure to poison oak.
  4. Able to tolerate extreme weather conditions.
  5. Strenuous work. Walking, climbing, stooping, running.
  6. Able to lift loads of 50-60 lb.

Details:

Salary: $300 - $400 week plus room and board
Housing: fulltime
