Arrowhead Ranch Outdoor Science School
Arrowhead Ranch

Naturalist

Description: We are located in the san bernardino national forest of southern California. We are in Lake Arrowhead above the San Bernardino basin. Naturalists teach fifth and sixth graders hands-on science approved by the California State Board of Education Science Framework. All teaching is done on the hiking trails of our properties. The naturalists coordinate the lessons with the hiking abilities of the kids. We teach botany, zoology, cycles, astronomy, meteorology, a night hike and a stations day of varied science games and activities. Naturalists participate in the skit night as well as the line dance. Naturalists are responsible for assisting kids in filling in their journals, setting tables and cleaning up, singing after breakfast and a lot of team building.

Naturalists do lesson planning before and after they teach. They are evaluated weekly. Every other week mandatory inservices are planned for growth and new teaching techniques. Naturalists need to be able to work with kids as they hike 3 times a day. Naturalists need to have experience teaching without lecturing. Lecturing is not a part of the program. We use the natural resources around us as we hike and teach. The naturalists are asked to perform as cabin leaders when needed to fill in for sick or absent cabin staff. Pay is increased obviously and training provided.

Naturalists are required to be flexible as schedules, weather and kids change each week. Naturalists need to be able to hike in all kinds of weather. Knowledge of the San Bernardino flora and fauna helpful. Leadership is essential to dealing with the kids, being a positive role model, kind in dealing with behavior of troubled kids.

We deal with kids who are ADD, ADHD, mental, physical and some emotional issues. They are all public school children from all over southern California. Some are in special day class, and in an effort to streamline them, they are a part of the public system and are included in camp. We do not turn any children away no matter what their circumstances. Our expectation is that every child who can come does come. We want each child to have this experience and the naturalists to help make a difference in the lives of all who attend.
