Master Teacher Naturalist

Position Description: The Master Teacher Naturalist will work closely with the Center Director in developing; implementing, coordinating, supervising and evaluating all aspects of a dynamic, interactive educational program for all visitors at the Audubon Center at Debs Park. The individual will help build an education program that brings the Center to the forefront of the environmental conservation community as a leading facility for urban nature education, conservation research, and community activism in Los Angeles. This position will also help develop education partnerships with surrounding sectors such as public and private schools, community based organizations, and institutions of higher education.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assists with the development, coordination and supervision of all aspects of Audubon Center environmental education, conservation research, and community activism programs.
  2. Collaborates with Audubon staff and community education leaders to conduct needs assessments, identify education mission, and develop plans for the Center’s education programs.
  3. Works with CD to establish priorities and schedules for short and long term educational goals,.
  4. Supervises development of educational materials, signage, exhibits, props, and equipment.
  5. Conducts educational programs.
  6. Mentors and coordinates other Teacher Naturalists.
  7. Develops and supervises the recruitment and training of staff and volunteers.
  8. Assists in the location of funding sources, hosting donor visits, writing grants, and reviewing proposals for program development.
  9. Serves as liaison to other organizations involved in environmental education, conservation research, and community activism.
  10. Participates in Audubon Centers and Education Department network initiatives, workshops, and conferences. Integrates national and state standards as necessary to ensure program consistency within the organization.

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

Relationships:

Internal: Reports directly to Center Director at Audubon Center at Debs Park, and supervises full and part-time personnel. Assists in the supervision of interns and volunteers.
External: Maintains a friendly and productive working relationship with the general public, visitors, vendors, members, donors, and contractors.

Equipment: (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, etc.)
Must be proficient in computers and current software, office equipment, copy machines, telephones, LCD projectors (and other AV equipment), fax, etc., as well as educational equipment such as water monitoring kits, microscopes, etc.

Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)
Must be in good physical condition. Working outdoors with center visitors and students requires some degree of physical activity but mostly normal lifting, reaching, walking on trails and to staging areas, etc.

Salary: $36-39,000/year
