Program Description: Big Rock Creek Camp is a small, family owned and operated camp. Over the past 25 years we have built a strong summer camping program as well as a respectable OED program. Approximately 50 public/private schools, churches, youth groups, military units and corporations enroll in our programming each year. We would like to increase that number, but more importantly, we want to ensure that the groups that have been visiting us over the years receive a top quality, effective, safe, enjoyable, caring, and improved program.

Job Description:  The lead instructor shall serve as the primary assistant to the Outdoor Education Director, Bert Gillette.  The lead instructor shall assist Bert in the scheduling, planning and facilitation of all OED and Adventure programming.  The lead instructor will be instrumental in the improvement of the existing program and the development of future programming and related facilities.  The lead instructor shall be excited to be working with a guy named Bert.

Qualifications: A minimum of 2 years experience in the field, or comparable education.  The ability to "hit the ground running" is a necessity. With minimal training, the new Lead Instructor shall be able to safely and effectively facilitate our high & low ropes challenge courses, team building activities and our many Outdoor Science/Experiential classes including: Wilderness Survival, Plant Study, Geology, Earth Science, Pioneer Skills, Native American Skills, Tracking, Rappelling, Orienteering, Star Study and more.

We require that the lead instructor have a love of the outdoors, a love of teaching, a love of children and a love of "children at heart." Limitlessssssss energy is a prerequisite.   The ability to lead camp fire programs is a must. The ability to play an instrument, tell good stories and sing, a plus. Please bring your expertise. We can modify or develop new classes to exploit your specialties.

We desire the lead instructor to lead and to host with integrity, honesty, understanding, humor and spirit.

The hard work part: Lots of hours during the busy seasons (April-June, September-October), As the OED season slows, the summer camping season begins. Work will shift to general camp duties including: hosting, cooking, cleaning, feeding the animals, life-guarding (get your certification, a big plus), and everything else that makes the camp run. Development, improvement, marketing and maintenance of the OED program and facilities will also take place this time of the year.

We would like the lead instructor to start mid-march, 2007. The job will run through October, and possibly part of November, 2007. Housing is provided.  You will share a three room cabin with one other person.  You will have your own bedroom.  Board (food) is provided (one meal per shift) if the kitchen is cooking. Utilities will be split between cabin residents.  This will be a salaried position of approximately $400/week. Workweeks in excess of 40 hours will not be uncommon.  Big Rock Creek Camp is an alcohol/tobacco/illegal drugs free zone…that doesn’t mean they’re free, it means they’re prohibited, including in residential areas.

(Housing may be available prior to the March, 2007 start date for the right candidate on a work for housing basis.)
