Outdoor Science/Adventure Instructor 

Job Description:  The instructor serves as a science and adventure facilitator while programs are running. During non-program times the instructor will serve as a camp host, lifeguard, maintenance person, kitchen help, etc.  

Qualifications: A minimum of 2 years experience in the field, or comparable education.  The ability to "hit the ground running" is a necessity. With minimal training you should be able to safely and effectively facilitate our high & low ropes challenge courses, team building activities and our many Outdoor Science/Experiential classes including: Wilderness Survival, Plant Study, Geology, Pond and Insect Study, Pioneer Skills, Native American Skills, High Ropes, Rappelling, Orienteering, Astronomy and more.

We require that the instructor have a love of the outdoors, a love of teaching, and a love of children. Limitless energy is a prerequisite.  The ability to play an instrument, tell good stories and sing, a plus. Please bring your expertise.

The instructor should lead and host with integrity, honesty, understanding, humor and spirit.

The hard work part: Lots of hours during the busy seasons (April-June, September-October), As the OED season slows, the summer camping season begins. Work will shift to general camp duties including: hosting, cooking, cleaning, feeding the animals, life-guarding (get your certification, a big plus), and everything else that makes the camp run.

We would like the instructor to start mid-April  2008. The job will run through October, and possibly part of November, 2008. Housing is provided.  You will share a three room cabin with one other person.  You will have your own bedroom.  Board (food) is provided (one meal per shift) if the kitchen is cooking. Utilities will be split between cabin residents.  This will be a salaried position of approximately $400/week. Workweeks in excess of 40 hours will not be uncommon.  Big Rock Creek Camp is an alcohol/tobacco/illegal drugs free zone…that doesn’t mean they’re free, it means they’re prohibited, including in residential areas.

(Housing may be available prior to the March, 2007 start date for the right candidate on a work for housing basis.)
