Director of Education

Description
The Director of Education at the Boojum Institute hires, trains, and supervises outdoor education field staff. The Director is responsible for oversight of Boojum’s outdoor education curriculum, and serves as the organization’s Field Risk Management Officer. The Director of Education works closely with the Director of Program on course delivery.

Job Responsibilities

Manage education program planning and high-level design.
Hire and supervise Instructors and Outdoor Education Interns
Plan and deliver staff trainings for outdoor education field staff
Maintain all aspects of field risk management, including safety policies and field practices
Manage Education budget
Maintain AEE Accreditation standards
Create and maintain written program materials and curricula

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in outdoor/experiential education or related field; Master’s preferred
Minimum three years successful experience managing operations of an outdoor education program with responsibility for staffing, curriculum, client contact, risk management, training and logistics
Minimum three years successful experience as an outdoor educator, preferably in activities and course areas similar to those of the Boojum Institute
High degree of organizational skills; impeccable attention to detail
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Outstanding interpersonal skills; team player
Strong background in the theory, practice and current industry standards of adventure education, outdoor education, environmental education, and risk management
Ability to successfully multi-task and work independently; computer literacy
Experience in top rope rock climbing and rappelling, low ropes and high ropes Challenge Courses, sea kayaking, expeditionary flatwater canoeing, backpacking
Current Wilderness First Responder or higher certification from recognized provider; current CPR certification

The Boojum Institute for Experiential Education offers outdoor programs that provide personal growth, group development and environmental education experiences in a variety of wilderness and outdoor settings. Participants on Boojum programs are challenged to develop personal skills in leadership, communication, team building and self confidence through facilitated adventure experiences. Since Boojum’s founding in 1975, over 80,000 individuals have participated in its base camp, rock climbing, Challenge Course, canoeing, sea kayaking, and backpacking programs in locations such as Joshua Tree National Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, Yosemite National Park, Colorado River and Lake Mead, and the Sierra Nevada, San Bernardino, Santa Cruz and San Jacinto Mountains.
