Executive Director

Description
As the chief executive of the Institute, the Executive Director articulates the organization’s strategic goals and leads the organization towards those goals.  The Executive Director works with Board and staff to ensure the organization communicates and maintains alignment with its mission, vision, and values.  The Executive Director oversees all aspects of developing and maintaining relationships with prospective and current clients and funding sources; of Boojum’s education program delivery and operations; and of financial, legal, risk management, and insurance aspects of the Institute.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Mission and Vision. Facilitate, with Board of Directors and staff, the articulation of Boojum’s mission, vision, and values, and ensure organizational adherence to same.
  2. Strategic Planning.  Facilitate development of and successful execution of comprehensive, multi-year strategic and business plan for the organization, including goals, objectives, strategy and tactics, that incorporates the long-term vision for the Institute and all aspects of program development and quality, fund development, marketing and sales, human resources and all of the other areas critical to the long-term success of the Institute.  Review and report on progress meeting Plan benchmarks.   Create and track organizational alignment with and commitment to plans.
  3. Education.  Ensure Boojum’s education program deliver educationally effective, appropriate learning experiences to clients.  Ensure program service quality through organizational success in curriculum development, staff training and retention, and service quality evaluation.
  4. Risk Management and Legal.  Manage organizational risk at the highest level, including insurance, accreditation, legal liability and adherence to laws and regulations as well as industry-specific risk management considerations such as wilderness safety.
  5. Financial.  Build and maintain financial strength and stability according to Business Plan metrics.  Develop and manage annual organizational budget.  Deliver accurate, regular financial reports to the Board and key staff.
  6. Marketing & Sales.  Sell participation in Boojum’s programs according to Business Plan metrics to new and returning clients through a comprehensive system of client management and outreach.
  7. Fund Development.  Develop and execute a development plan for the Boojum Institute according to Business Plan metrics, including grants, individual and corporate giving, and events.
  8. Administration.  Successfully establish and maintain administrative systems, policies, procedures.  Manage administrative aspects of the organization such as government reporting requirements, vendor relationships, and audit. 
  9. Personnel.  Recruit, screen, hire/fire, supervise, schedule, mentor and recognize management staff and select volunteers.  Develop and implement organizational staffing plan.
  10. Board of Directors.  Follow direction and vision of the Board; report to the Board as appropriate.  Help formulate and assist in Board training, the function of Board committees and other aspects of Board operations.
  11. Accreditation.  Maintain appropriate accreditation status with the Association for Experiential Education and/or other accrediting bodies.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s Degree in Education Administration, Business Management, or related field strongly preferred. 
  2. Three years’ executive management and leadership experience with proven track record of success and with overall responsibility for mission, vision, and financial results.  
  3. Practical experience in an understanding of theory and practice of outdoor education, environmental education, adventure education and experiential education.  
  4. Demonstrated skills in development and fundraising, marketing and sales, financial management, strategic planning and program development.  
  5. Outstanding written and spoken communication skills. 
  6. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.  Demonstrated accuracy with details. 
  7. Ability to successfully work as team member, multi-task, and work independently.  Advanced computer literacy.

The Boojum Institute for Experiential Education offers outdoor programs that provide personal growth, group development and environmental education experiences in wilderness and outdoor settings. Participants on Boojum programs are challenged to develop personal skills in leadership, communication, team building and self confidence through facilitated adventure experiences. Participants explore the natural world through hands-on investigation and develop skills for responsible and sustainable environmental behavior. 

Boojum offers three types of programs: experiential outdoor education courses for public and independent school students, leadership and organizational development programs, and Adventure Challenge Programs for urban and rural youth at-risk populations.

Since Boojum’s founding in 1975, over 80,000 individuals have participated in its base camp, rock climbing, Challenge Course, canoeing, sea kayaking, and backpacking programs in locations such as Joshua Tree National Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, Yosemite National Park, Colorado River and Lake Mead, and the Sierra Nevada, San Bernardino, Santa Cruz and San Jacinto Mountains. The Boojum Institute administrative headquarters are located in Anza, California.
