GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a challenging and rewarding leadership position directing all aspects of the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center. The Center is located 90 minutes north of San Francisco in the west coast's only national seashore, Point Reyes. The nine building facility is in a wilderness area one mile from the ocean. The director leads two dynamic K-12 programs cultivating awareness, knowledge, and stewardship of the natural world. During the September through June school year, the Director facilitates school groups coming for three to five day residential EE experiences at the Center. Unique to our program, teachers plan and execute their own lessons and activities with training and support from the Director and staff. During the summer, the Director organizes and leads a team of naturalists, counselors, and cooks providing eight one-week sessions of a residential environmental education camp. The Environmental Education Center is a program of the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, a private nonprofit partnering with the National Park Service.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director has full responsibility for all program and facility operations at the Environmental Education Center.
This includes:

  1. School Program -- recruit, train, and support teachers to implement effective 3-5 day hands-on environmental education experiences for 30-80 students, teachers and adults.
  2. Point Reyes Summer Camp -- plan and implement a residential science and nature summer camp with eight 1-week sessions for children ages 7-16 (Monday through Friday). Requires marketing camp, being responsible for the well being and safety of 50 children while they are on site, hiring/training/supervising 17- 20 seasonal staff, organizing logistics, maintaining quality education programs.
  3. Plan and implement $300,000 budget.
  4. Plan and direct all maintenance and operations in compliance with health and safety codes, Federal regulations, and Education Center protocols and standards.
  5. Maintain effective administration systems necessary for the programs.

Qualifications:
Required: academic background in natural history/sciences, and/or extensive experience teaching environmental education to youth, minimum two years experience at a residential environmental education program, experience supervising staff, familiarity with administrative and academic workings of public/private K-12 schools, love of working with children, ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences, demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks & maintain effective administrative systems, group facilitation skills, PC computer skills, clean driving record and valid drivers license. Must be 21 years of age. Willingness and ability to pass Class B commercial driving test. Must pass background check, including FBI and DOJ fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon the validation of a clean DMV driving record and physical in order to obtain a California Class 'B' license. Standard first aid and CPR training is required.

Essential Functions:Visual, auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental, other hazards. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, use equipment and tools, drive agency vehicle, traverse difficult and uneven terrain, work for short periods in uncomfortable positions, use or learn to use telephone, computer and office equipment, use fuel and other maintenance and cleaning solvents and supplies.

Desirable: Advanced education and/or teaching credentials, budgeting, Wilderness First Aid or EMT, food handlers' license or experience with restaurant health code standards, OSHA training, writing skills, facility management/repair experience.

This is an excellent "director" level position for the right candidate who has appropriate preparation to move into a leadership/management position.

Full-time, Monday through Friday, occasional weekends required.
Summer Camp:
Full-time, Monday through Friday, occasional weekends required, sleep overnight at camp when children are present (3-4 nights per week for 8 weeks).

Salary: Mid-40,000s to low 50,000s per year
