Residential Summer Science Camps

 

Field Instructor

 

Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), University of California at Berkeley, is recruiting field teachers for the 2008 Summer Science Camps. Work with the resources and reputation of the University, lead motivated youth and families in beautiful outdoor settings, teaching hands-on, interactive natural history alongside experienced professionals in a supportive environment. Coastal Ecology at Sempervirens Camp

Santa Cruz Mountains near big Basin State Park. June 23- 27 July 4. Ages 8-12.
Teachers plan, organize, and conduct natural history and science classes as well as arts, crafts, and sports activities. Field trips to tidepools and Big Basin State Park. Teachers prepare lesson plans and assist with supervision of campers and interns. Paid planning days include a few meetings before camp including May 17-18. 8-12 positions available (4-6 field teachers, 6-9 interns)

Backpacking Science Camps
Grouse Ridge July 8-13. Ages 10-16.
Each backpack group consists of two leaders with 13 campers. Leaders teach basic camping skills, orienteering, and low impact camping as well as natural history of the area, group games and team building to youth. Paid staff retreat in June (date TBA). Six positions available.

Marine Biology Research Camp – (Fully Staffed)
Bodega Marine Lab (Sonoma County), June 14-19, grades 9-12.
Field teachers lead field and lab activities. Field teachers will help supervise students during teaching activities, recreation times and in dorms. Marine biology background required. 2 positions available.

Wildlife Biology Research Camp
Sagehen Research Station (north of Truckee), July 30-August 4, August 4-9 grades 9-12.
Teachers lead or assist with field & lab activities such as live trapping, bird watching, student projects, & sampling of vegetation, streams & insects. Teachers assist with supervising campers in cabins. Strong field biology skills preferred. 4 positions available. Also hiring someone to cook.

FIELD TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
A background in science &/or natural history education, with demonstrated teaching ability and experience required. Prior experience as a field teacher highly desirable. First aid & CPR certification required for most positions, WFA, WFR and lifeguard certification a plus. A small bus CDL desirable. Backpacking experience required for some positions. Field research experience highly desirable for research camps. Background checks required.
