Overview: The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is seeking enthusiastic education professionals to join our Education team. The position of Zoo Curator of Education is now open for filing with the City of Los Angeles. This civil service position is responsible for the planning, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Zoo’s education programs. Minimum qualifications include graduation from a recognized four-year college or university and either one year of full-time paid professional experience at a zoo, natural history museum, or related facility, or two years of full time paid professional teaching experience in a school classroom. A strong background in on-grounds interpretation is preferred but not required.

Job Description: A Zoo Curator of Education plans, develops, and implements a comprehensive zoo education program and public information program at the Los Angeles Zoo; or assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of employees engaged in these activities; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work force; and fulfills Equal Employment Opportunity responsibilities.

Job Type: Full Time, Year Round, Non-Residential
Status: Permanent

Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university; and
  2. Either
    1. One year of full-time paid professional experience at a zoo, natural history museum, or related facility which has public exhibits of wildlife, performing duties such as: developing, implementing, coordinating, or evaluating various kinds of educational and informational programs for the facility; providing study materials, using audio visual aids and lectures, preparing brochures or other written materials and lesson plans for such programs; preparing or supporting research for educational articles for publication in papers and scientific journals, or organizing research materials; or
    2. Two years of full time paid professional teaching experience in a school classroom.
  3. In addition to completing an online City application, each candidate is required to submit online the Zoo Curator of Education Training and Experience Questionnaire at the time of filing. Candidates who fail to submit these documents within the time required will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.

NOTES:

  1. A degree with a major in a Life Science is especially desired, but not required.
  2. For qualifying work experience gained outside of the City of Los Angeles, the term "professional experience" applies to positions that require possession of a degree from a recognized four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered "professional", non-City qualifying experience must be gained in positions after obtaining a four-year degree.
  3. Candidates who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement has been met.

Salary: $49,652 - $88,531/year
