Description: The mission of MCC's AmeriCorps Environmental Restoration
Program (ER) is to help youth and adults develop an ethic of environmental stewardship
and appreciation
for Marin's local parks and public lands through environmental education
in schools and service-learning projects that restore habitat, while providing
meaningful training opportunities to AmeriCorps members. In this one-year program,
members of the ER Program serve in one of two crews dedicated to engaging the
public in habitat restoration projects.
Members of the Restoration and Ecosystem Management (REM) Crew
are partnered with a mentor from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area,
Point Reyes National
Seashore, or the Marin Municipal Water District. This crew is designed
to offer AmeriCorps members an introduction to field research, ecological
monitoring,
and public outreach. REM corpsmembers also recruit and lead groups of volunteer
community members in restoration activities.
Members of the Youth in Environmental Service (YES) Crew are partnered
with a local middle or high school, as well as with local environmental organizations.
This crew is designed to offer AmeriCorps members an opportunity to teach
environmental
content to youth, to implement school recycling projects, gardening and/or
conservation
projects, and to lead youth in habitat restoration. YES corpsmembers also
serve as Team Leaders for MCC's summer environmental service day camp, Project
ReGeneration.
The specific position descriptions vary within the program in
terms of responsibilities, qualifications, daily routine and job title.
