Summer Team Supervisor-Project ReGeneration

Program Description: The Marin Conservation Corps (MCC) is a local non-profit job training, education and development program serving youth and adults ages 11-30. MCC assists young adults in the development of basic job competencies and qualifying work experience for employment in a wide variety of fields. Participants work on crews implementing projects in natural resource conservation, ecological restoration, recycling, service learning projects with children, and public land beautification in Marin County. MCC helps corpsmembers to enhance their academic and vocational abilities and assists them in formulating and progressing toward their long-term employment and educational goals.

Project ReGeneration is MCC's summer service learning and environmental education program for youth aged 11-17. The program consists of two, four-week sessions engaging youth in recycling, habitat restoration and community service projects throughout Marin County. For the summer 2006, the program will operate with six Supervisors leading teams of 10 participants. The participants will be grouped into “High School 1” (grades 9 & 10), “High School 2” (grades 11 & 12), and “Junior High” (grades 6 to 8) teams. Project ReGeneration is unique among summer youth programs in that participants engage in service projects and receive a stipend for their efforts. Formal education, hands-on learning, team-building, and recreational activities are central to the program.

Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities: Each Project ReGeneration Team Supervisor works under the direction of the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator, providing daily supervision to 10 Project ReGeneration members, planning daily logistics and leading environmental service projects, driving a 12-passenger van, and educating the team on environmental and science subjects. The Project ReGeneration Supervisor must be available for training (June 5 to 16, 2006) and for the duration of the program (June 19 through August 11, 2006), and evaluation day on (August 14, 2006).

• Provide daily supervision of 10 members aged 11-14 or 14-17; providing a safe environment, enforcing program rules, providing performance evaluations, conducting disciplinary procedures, and facilitating personal development.
• Oversee the daily environmental education program; including science education in the field and leading group discussions.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to one of MCC's Youth in Environmental Service (YES) Crew AmeriCorps members who aid in the facilitation the environmental education program and supervision of members within the teams.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to ReGen members in the areas of personal and academic development, community service ethics, professionalism, environmental ethics, recycling issues, and public relations.
• Coordinate daily team logistics including driving to the service project site, gathering materials, and outlining the daily and weekly work plans with sponsoring agencies around Marin County.
• Ensure all safety procedures are followed at all times.
• Track and compile project accomplishment data on a daily basis.
• Maintain daily tracking of member accomplishments and attendance.

• Experience supervising youth from a wide variety of social, economic and educational backgrounds to work together as a team on service projects.
• Must have experience serving and volunteering in the community, must possess a strong service ethic, and be able to instill this ethic into team members.
• Effective conflict resolution and classroom/team management skills for youth.
• Experience teaching or facilitating education in an outdoor setting.
• Experience conducting natural resource/environmental restoration projects and using required tools safely.
• Familiarity with environmental issues, particularly with recycling and resource conservation concepts.
• Must have a clean DMV record (one point or less), California Driver's License, and ability to obtain Class B license.
