Description: Come work in a beautiful mountain setting teaching students how to appreciate, understand and protect our natural environment. You would take part in all phases of providing the program to the students such as leading nature studies, all day hikes, crafts, evening programs, storytelling, and songleading. Other duties include some overnight supervision in the cabin, dining hall supervision, and other duties as assigned. The SDCOE is seeking qualified individuals to work in the Outdoor Education Program's resident outdoor schools. Outdoor Education Program Specialists are responsible for providing science and human development instruction to public and private school children. The Outdoor Education Program Specialists are also responsible for the general supervision of the children visiting the outdoor schools. The Cuyamaca and Fox Outdoor Schools operated by Outdoor Education are located in remote mountain areas of San Diego County, between 1 and 2 hours driving time from the City of San Diego. Work schedules are variable and some overnights required as a part of all regular assignments. The eligibility list established by this examination will be used to fill any vacancies occurring during the six (6) months following its establishment.
This is a Seasonal, School Year, Residential position.
Qualifications: Knowledge of the educational needs and interests of sixth graders in the areas of natural science (such as biology, astronomy, and ecology), conservation, handicrafts, and recreational activities. Ability to: tutor individual students and small groups; provide basic first aid; communicate effectively with children and adults; maintain control of groups of children; establish rapport with children and adults; accept direction from school site administrator, teachers, and other staff members. Must be physically capable of leading extended mountain hikes. Must be available to work varying assignments in the 24-hour residential school schedule, including regular overnight assignments.
EXPERIENCE and EDUCATION:
Experience and education demonstrating possession of the knowledge and abilities
detailed above. An example of qualifying preparation would be completion of
college-level coursework in the natural sciences, recreation, education, or
other related topics,
and/or experience working in an outdoor education or recreation program, especially
in a residential setting. Possession of both education and experience qualifications
is highly desirable.
Salary: $2,852 - $3,145/month to start--$3,642/month
