non-profit organizations are invited to learn about the

Education and the Environment Initiative

Assembly Bill 1548 (Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003)

On November 12, 2004 environmental education providers and representatives of non-profit organizations are invited to attend a meeting at the Los Angeles River Center & Gardens to learn about the work undertaken thus far to implement the Education and the Environment Initiative [EEI] (Assembly Bill 1548 [Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003]).

The Education and the Environment Initiative was signed into law in October 2003.It mandates the development of a unified strategy to bring education about the environment into California’s K-12 schools. Specifically, this law requires:

ü     Development of education principles and concepts for the environment;

ü     Alignment of the environmental principles and concepts to California’s academic content standards to ensure that students achieve mastery;

ü     Development of a model curriculum for K-12 schools;

ü     Incorporation of the environmental principles and concepts into criteria for textbook adoption in science, history/social science, English/language arts and, mathematics; and,

ü     Alignment of the state’s diverse environmental education programs with the environmental principles and concepts.

The purpose of this listening session is to bring stakeholders up to date on the progress made in implementing the Initiative, answer any questions, and share the next steps. The Education and the Environment Initiative represents landmark legislation – your involvement is encouraged.
