An Opportunity for Involvement in the Education and the Environment Initiative

K-12 Model Environmental Curriculum

In October 2003, AB1548 was signed into law establishing the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI). This document describes an opportunity for your agency or organization to be involved in the implementation of this important legislation.

The law that established the EEI mandated several important new opportunities for California's kindergarten through 12th-grade education system including:

In addition, the law mandates the development and dissemination of a "model environmental curriculum." The purpose of the model curriculum is to help students achieve mastery of both their grade-level academic content standards and the Environmental Principles and Concepts. Specifically, AB1548 directs that the model curriculum must be:

With the help and participation of hundreds of individuals, agencies and organizations the EEI has made significant progress since AB1548 was signed into law (see Appendix A-click here).

To date, these accomplishments include the development of California's first ever Environmental Principles and Concepts, and their incorporation in science textbook adoption criteria (see Appendix B-click here).

The next major element of the EEI involves the design and development of the model curriculum. The design phase began in Fall 2004 with work on the alignment of the EP&C to California's academic content standards. The design phase will be completed by April 30, 2005.

Invitation to Participate in the Design of the Model Curriculum

The planners of the model curriculum invite your agency or organization to participate in the process of designing the model curriculum by completing the linked form (available as a Word doc or PDF file). This form is intended to help identify governmental and non-governmental organizations that offer environmental curricula and instructional materials that have goals and learning objectives that are compatible with the EEI.

Your agency or organization should provide information if you:

The information collected in this survey will be used to identify organizations that are currently providing California-specific and national environmental curricula and instructional materials. This process will allow the planning team to focus efforts on those organizations that want their instructional materials considered during the design of the model curriculum.

Please complete and return the linked survey form (survey_1.pdf) or fill out and email the Word document version of the survey form (survey_1.doc).

The survey form can be sent by e-mail to:

Self-Evaluation Instrument for Providers of Environmental Instructional Materials

Thank you for participating in this self-evaluation of environmental instructional materials. This document requests more detailed information about your agency’s or organization’s environmental instruction materials. Click here to download the self-evaluation of instructional materials (PDF - 116K)

This self-evaluation is intended to gather basic information concerning instructional materials that may be useful in the development of the Model Curriculum pursuant to Assembly Bill 1548 (Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003).

If any of the following apply to your agency or organization, please complete and return the self-evaluation instrument(s) by March 15, 2005. Your agency or organization would like:

Participating organizations are asked to submit copies of instructional materials they want considered by the model curriculum planning team. Submissions may include instructional materials in their entirety or relevant individual activities. Please note that these materials will not be returned.

On March 16th, the model curriculum planning team will begin reviewing the results of the self-evaluations and the submitted materials. If it is determined that there are possible connections to the learning objectives of the model curriculum, the planning team will request permission to integrate or adapt the materials into the model curriculum plan. If your organization has an established policy about use and/or adaptation of materials please submit a copy with your materials. Credit for ownership of any materials that are included will be provided in the final publication.
