Job Description
Are you passionate about science? Do you enjoy working with kids? Do you like working outside?
If you answered "Yes" to those questions, this may be the perfect position for you. It is ideally suited for people with a good science background who have already been working in outdoor education. LACOSS is currently hiring full-time science teachers / Naturalists for next school year. LACOSS is a residential, outdoor, science field study, education program that emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based, experiential learning. Content includes a variety of ecosystem science concepts. The Outdoor Science School operates at two beautiful locations in the mountains near Los Angeles, California.
DUTIES
Teach science to 5th and 6th grade students, using experiential, hands-on teaching techniques in the outdoors. The curriculum includes NGSS science concepts such as ecosystems, basic astronomy, geology & soils, human ecology, science practices, etc. Naturalists will also lead evening programs, provide student supervision, and train and supervise volunteer cabin leaders. Other duties common to residential outdoor education programs may be assigned as needed. Hours will vary and include on-call 2 nights per week. All duties are scheduled to be completed within a 40-hour work week.
QUALIFICATIONS
BA/BS in life science, natural resources (interpretation or education), environmental science, relevant physical science (geology, astronomy, etc.) or other comparable fields. Course work should include several life and earth science courses, and some field experience. Previous outdoor teaching experience required. First Aid/CPR certification (WFA preferred) is required. Must be physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Must be able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills. Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired, but not required. Willing to work irregular hours.
JOB PERIOD: 2019-20 season is 24 weeks between October 21 to May 22.

Compensation Information:

COMPENSATION: $16.18 to $20.06/hr. Housing available for entire season and meals provided during teaching weeks.
