Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation

Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation, Vallecito; Carolee White; Expiration 8/26/05. Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation has been providing underground adventures in California since 1978. We operate four caverns (Boyden Cavern, Moaning Cavern, Black Chasm and California Cavern) and a gold mine (Sutter Gold Mine) providing education and fun on our family tours and thrills and challenges on our extended expeditions.

SCHOOLS can utilize our comprehensive school program as an adjunct to a field trip, or as a unit in and of itself. We designed it to give students a memorable and lively education on the unique geology of caves and caverns, on the uses that caves have been put to over time by man, and on the cave life that can be found within. School lesson plans are located on this website and information on the program can be found by clicking HERE to go to our Education pages. What could be more appropriate when learning about California's Gold Rush than taking an underground tour into a real gold mine? At Sutter Gold Mine, your students will actually traverse deep inside the Mother Lode - the gold bearing quartz vein structure that runs beneath the historic Gold Country, and inspired the dreams of thousands. The school program at all of our locations includes optional above ground activities related to the study area. You can customize your field trip to suit your schedule, budget and interests. We value our school groups and do all we can to make your trip the best ever!

The Lassen County Office of Education's 6th Grade Outdoor Education School at Eagle Lake (whew!) is celebrating its 30th year of service to the students of Lassen County in 2006. Certified by COSA: The Outdoor School was revisited in 2001 by COSA (California Outdoor School Administrators) for State of California ROSS (Residental Outdoor Science School) certification and recognition as is required every 5 years. It passed with high recommendations and many compliments from the visiting team. The Outdoor School was first certified in 1996. Our Program invites students to stay 4 days and 3 nights. Each day has a theme that the lessons are built around. The Big Picture, however, is to give the students an opportunity to develop their scientific thinking skills and critical thinking skills to be able to gather information about the world arround them and apply it to decisions they make everyday. Of course, along the way, they also learn about living and learning with other people, friendships, self-reliance, and self-confidence. It is an amazing and often life changing experience.

Camp Augusta

Camp Augusta, Nevada City; Dr. Randall Grayson, PhD; Expiration 2/15/08. Camp Augusta's mission is to provide children a safe, fun-filled experience that will serve as a catalyst for personal growth and an appreciation of the outdoors. We provide a supportive environment geared toward each child's needs and interests. Our nurturing atmosphere is achieved by limiting our total number of campers per session, increased supervision, and a dedicated and caring staff. In a small, tight, true community set in natural splendor, campers develop self-confidence, independence, social skills (emotional intelligence), creativity, activity skills, environmental awareness and appreciation, friendships, and healthy living skills. Kids also learn what most modern children have forgotten -- how to just play and be a kid without television, video games, the internet, canned games, or social pressure.

William Jessup University’s Pacific Forest Institute; Rocklin (serving educators from around the state); Mark McReynolds; Expiration 4/5/07.

Using field reviews and demonstrations, we’ll explore how we can meet today’s human needs, while ensuring that our forests’ renewable resources can be sustained for future generations.  Curriculum activities will be modeled (you’ll do them with us!) and you’ll have peer group breakout sessions and personal curriculum development time. These activities will help translate sessions with experts into learning activities appropriate for your grade level and tie them to the California State Science Standards. You’ll leave with a box of teaching materials, lots of information and inspiration, and a self-produced lesson plan ready for use in your classroom. Prepare for an active week! On Sunday, workshops will begin at William Jessup University to give you background information and curriculum options you’ll use the rest of the week.  Our June workshop will be using  the WJU campus as base camp and taking field trips, starting on Tuesday.  The July workshop will begin at WJU, but on Tuesday leave for the stunning Hidden Lakes Retreat Center in the High Sierra, surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest. You’ll spend a great deal of time outside, on trails and dirt roads, but these activities will mostly consist of walking and talking, not strenuous hiking. Make sure you view a description of both sites and a tentative schedule on our website before you register.  www.jessup.edu/academics/pacificforestinstitute

Sly Park Environmental Education Center Sly Park Environmental Education Center, Pollock Pines, California. (membership complimentary in exchange for web hosting - thank you!) The Sly Park Environmental Education Center is a different kind of learning environment where the "classroom" is outdoors and the students actively engage in field studies in the Eldorado National forest. This type of experiential education - environmental education - is significant and valuable because children learn best when actively immersed. The best place to learn about the forest is in the forest! Children learn about connections in the natural world, the value of natural resources, and the importance of conservation to our future. As well, the students develop skills needed to get along with each other: cooperation, problem-solving, and friendship-building. These skills will make our world a better place Sly Park is operated by the Sacramento County Office of Education and Certified by COSA.
