Role of a Camp Inclusion Specialist:
The Camp Inclusion Specialist will work with and support CuriOdyssey educators and seasonal summer staff with the integration and development of campers with special needs by providing professional development for staff and volunteers, communication with camper families, social and emotional support for campers, and collaboration with aides accompanying campers. The Camp Inclusion Specialist works to ensure that the day camp program fulfills our promise to spark excitement, curiosity, and exploration through exceptional immersive experiences for all learners.

Campers may have autism spectrum disorder, ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s, or other social/emotional and developmental needs. There will likely be two to four individual campers each session benefiting from support of the Camp Inclusion Specialist. Communication with campers’ parents/guardians is important and furthers CuriOdyssey’s impact by collaborating with the whole family. The goal is to create an authentic, inquiry based, immersive, and student driven learning environment tailored to the child’s learning needs and with great respect for the identity, cultural background and lived experiences of each learner.

Responsibilities of a Camp Inclusion Specialist:
o The Camp Inclusion Specialist provides ongoing training, support and feedback to all camp staff and volunteers.
o Provide direct support to designated and/or identified campers within the camp program ensuring a safe, fun, and engaging learning environment.
o Communicating with a camper’s parent/guardian about their camper’s involvement in camp, camp staff on current best practices and problem solving, and the Director of Education on organizational support for the camp program.
o Coordinating and communicating with any camper aides provided by the family and accompanying campers.
o Assisting with the development and modification of camp content to be inclusionary for diverse learners.
o Camp Inclusion Specialist may also work within a camp to facilitate camp activities and engage campers in distinctive educational experiences.
o Like in most every other job, projects and tasks arise that may be delegated or taken on by the Camp Inclusion Specialist.

Who We Are Seeking as a Camp Inclusion Specialist:
The Camp Inclusion Specialist for CuriOdyssey reflects our institutional personality and values. Someone that is creative, curious, open-minded and compassionate is most successful. An effective Camp Inclusion Specialist has completed or is in pursuit of a Degree/Certification in Education, Special Education, or related field from an accredited college or university, and has a minimum of one year of experience working with children particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. An individual who understands and respects the children, recognizes that learning is a process not a product, is committed to positive behavior management, and makes the learning process engaging, fun, and driven by the individual camper.

A candidate with experience working with and/or supporting communities of diverse cultures, identities and lived experiences is desirable. The Inclusion Specialist must have a growth mindset for allyship with all camp participants, staff, and volunteers of varying race, color, religion, ancestry, sex, age, disability, and citizenship.
