    Job Description:
    The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Outreach/Waterfront Program Coordinator will increase participation in SUNY Maritime College's degree, professional and community programs especially, but not exclusively, for underrepresented groups including minorities and females, enhancing engagement of youth and exposing them to opportunities available in the maritime industries which can help launch them into successful maritime careers that will change the course of their lives.

    This position works with the Dean of Admissions, department chairs, faculty, students and program directors in Aquatics, Athletics, Conference Services, Waterfront, and potentially Housing to enhance and promote coordinate existing public programs (i.e. STEM Academy, STEAM Days, Fleet Week, Maritime Adventure Splash and Boat Camp, powerboat training, high school sailing) and develop new initiatives (e.g. STEM After School Program, school field trips, vocational training opportunities/internships). The STEM Strategic Outreach Coordinator reports to the Waterfront Director.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Strategic Outreach to dramatically increase program size and scope (50%)
    Market summer SUNY Maritime STEM initiatives and public programs to the local community, schools and other organizations, with an emphasis on underserved populations, in the New York City region, other urban areas around New York State (e.g. Yonkers, Buffalo, Albany) and port cities in the mid-Atlantic (e.g. Philadelphia, Baltimore).
    Coordinate STEM outreach events in New York City and area schools utilizing faculty, staff, students and alumni.
    Coordinate information sessions for parents and students at school and other community venues regarding opportunities in the maritime industry and paths to those careers.
    Coordinate with SUNY Maritime College admissions office regarding recruiting efforts.
    Promote program expansion as a means of engaging alumni and community volunteers through a variety of publicity channels including the College's magazine, web site, social media and regional press.
    Utilize a strong customer relations management database and social media systems to maintain contact with interested youth participants, and to increase their awareness of maritime programs and to make the path to maritime education and career an achievable goal.

    Strengthen existing programs and develop new initiatives (30%)
    Enhance existing programs (i.e. STEM Academy, STEAM Days, Fleet Week, Maritime Adventure Splash and Boat Camps, powerboat training, high school sailing)
    Develop new initiatives (e.g. STEM After School Program, school field trips, vocational training, opportunities/internships) with faculty, staff and students into a cohesive set of maritime education and training paths for the public with an emphasis on disadvantaged youth
    Ensure programs meet the needs of students and organizations that support them by strengthening working relationships with feeder schools and other organizations
    Develop additional and stronger partnerships with organizations, schools, and employers who share a commitment to building educational/employment pathways to maritime careers for youth with an emphasis on disadvantaged youth. This may be achieve by convening the following work groups:
    Maritime-focused Educational Partners, potentially including, but not limited to: New York Harbor School, Maritime Academy Charter Schools (Philadelphia, PA), Western New York Maritime Charter School (Buffalo, NY), and New Era Academy (Baltimore, MD)
    Maritime and Community focused Organizations, including but not limited to: Billion Oyster Project, Rocking the Boat, Naval Cadets, Sea Scouts, Boy and Girl Scouts
    Current Maritime Students, including student groups, Student Activities staff, and the Regiment to establish a means of consistently engaging students to work directly with program participants in academic/STEM programs and intramural/recreational activities
    Oversee public programs which include, but are not limited to STEM programs, on-the-water undergraduate courses and student activities; and Waterfront community programs such as summer camp, sailing and powerboat courses, clinics, and recreational programs

    Administration (10%)
    Hire, train, and manage personnel including instructors, student assistants, summer staff, and volunteers
    Supervise safety and operational policies for STEM and public programs
    Assist with execution of programs and special events - as needed
    Facilitate an active traditional and social media presence with College's Communications office

    Support (10%)
    Work with SUNY Maritime College Institutional Advancement staff, faculty, and the Waterfront Director to obtain the financial support (i.e. grants, donations, sponsorships, program fees) from industry, foundation, government and individuals to sustain and significantly grow Maritime's STEM/public programming
    Ensure facilities and equipment are properly maintained and operated to support current and long-range goals for campus and public programs
    Support the success of colleagues and other duties as assigned

    Requirements:
    Required Qualifications:

    Bachelor's Degree in education, youth development or STEM related field
    3-5 years of experience teaching middle school, high school or vocational training, working in STEM education, career preparedness or youth development
    Experience developing, promoting, managing and evaluating academically enriching programs, community programs and/or student activities
    Enthusiastic, outgoing, organized, willing to continually learn and improve.
    Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
    Familiar with database management and social media
    Ability to work evenings and weekends when required
    Preferred Qualifications:

    Supervisory or managerial experience at a school, camp, community recreation center, collegiate-level Waterfront, or similar program
    Ability to fund raise (i.e. grant writing)
    US Sailing Level 1, 2 or 3 sailing/coach, Certified Basic Keelboat, Cruising or Bareboat Certified Instructor
    US Sailing/US Powerboat Certified Sport or Cruising Powerboat Instructor
    Competitive sailing experience at collegiate level or higher, coaching and instructing experience

    Additional Information:
    Classification/Salary Range: The STEM Strategic Outreach Coordinator is a United University Professions (UUP) position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $60,000 - $75,000, annually, with an outstanding benefits package. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.     Special Notes: This is a full-time, year-round /calendar year (partially grant funded) appointment, UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. This position often requires working a non-traditional schedule (i.e. evenings and weekends) in order to accommodate the operational needs of the College Waterfront programs.
