Summary
Save Mount Diablo is a nationally accredited, nonprofit land trust founded in 1971 with a mission to preserve Mount Diablo’s peaks, surrounding foothills, watersheds, and connection to the Diablo Range through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain’s natural beauty, biological diversity, and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance our area’s quality of life; and provide educational and recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources. The organization is looking to hire a talented and passionate individual to serve as a full-time Education and Outreach Coordinator based out of Save Mount Diablo’s office in Walnut Creek, California.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a Monday through Friday schedule, and occasional weekend work, that reports to the Land Programs Director. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the appropriate candidate is found.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Help run and support SMD’s existing education programs (Discover Diablo, Conservation Collaboration Agreement Program, Mary Bowerman Science and Research Program, Mangini Ranch Educational Preserve, etc.) and further our education efforts consistent with our Strategic Plan and Climate Action Plan. .
• Coordinates SMD volunteer program including intake, training, organization, retention, and recognition.
• Coordinate, promote, and staff the Discover Diablo free public education outings program including annual planning, scheduling outing leaders, leading outings, promotion of the program and permit and hiker registration.
• Coordinate and support SMD’s Education Committee
• Coordinate and support SMD’s new elementary school program for 3rd to 5th graders.
• Coordinate, promote, and staff SMD’s Mangini Ranch Educational Preserve including overseeing registrations, volunteer docents, and other related activities and tasks.
• Coordinate the annual Bioblitz and support the Dr. Mary Bowerman Science and Research Program, including its Colloquium.
• Coordinate, promote, and staff the Conservation Collaboration Agreement program with local schools.
• Helps facilitate the use of SMD' s properties for education and outreach as appropriate.
• Coordinate speaking requests, working with the administrative staff.
• Represent Save Mount Diablo at community meetings, tabling events, and in local partnerships.
• Collaborates with the stewardship team to help care for SMD properties by leading educational workdays and to identify consistent volunteer opportunities that are consistent with SMD' s Strategic Plan.
• Help support and staff SMD events as necessary, such as Four Days Diablo and Moonlight on the Mountain.
• Support the Land Programs Director with strategic and program planning and budgeting.
• Partner with other departments to share information, develop integrated strategies and achieve clear communication across the organization.
• Provide input and content for education and outreach communications, publications, and on website.
• General support to the Land Programs Director and Stewardship team as needed.
• Must be able to work outside in changing environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Train, manage, and support education, outreach and stewardship volunteers and seasonal interns as appropriate. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in close coordination with the Land Programs Director and in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include risk management, project safety and ensuring high quality outcomes. Volunteers are an integral part of SMD's efforts on and around Mount Diablo. The Education and Outreach Coordinator must be able to coordinate, supervise, and show appreciation for our volunteers.
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications
• 3+ years of experience with environmental education, volunteer outreach, and/or volunteer coordination, and land stewardship.
• Strong foundation in ecological principles, knowledge of East Bay ecosystems and open space desirable.
• Ability to develop, execute, and administer programs.
• Comfort with public speaking presentations.
• Experience working with and supervising volunteers in field settings.
• Ability to manage/navigate/direct individuals and group dynamics.
• Knowledge of restoration ecology a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
• Ability to be accurate and detailed in accomplishing a variety of daily tasks.
• Advanced skills in research, writing, and public speaking.
• Ability to work independently and maintain a high level of productivity.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor' s degree in a teaching or environmental field desirable, graduate work preferred, as well as 3 years of work experience related to position qualifications.
Essential Requirements
• Possess valid driver' s license, clean driving record and insurance.
• Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in off road applications.
• Daily access to a motor vehicle.
• In general, likely to require frequent weekend-oriented schedules and early morning or evening commitments.
• Must have a clean background and pass a background check to SMD’s satisfaction.
• First aid training, wilderness first aid training a plus.
Physical Demands
• Ability to frequently lift, carry/move small boxes, furniture, equipment and supplies at least 60 lbs.
• Ability to hike and work, often on rugged terrain and in varied weather.
