Position Summary:
Through K-12 programs, high school internships, and adult education programs, Canopy leads Midpeninsula communities to the knowledge, attitude, skills, and actions that support the urban forest. Every year our education programs inspire hundreds of community members and students, not only to understand the science of how trees make our cities healthy and livable, but also to reconnect with trees and nature.
The Education intern will support Canopy’s Education team, particularly the Adult Education Coordinator and K-12 Environmental Educator. This role will provide flexible support for education programs, which may include assistance with behind-the-scenes coordination, preparation, research, outreach, and/or record-keeping as needed. The Education intern will also have the opportunity to attend programs in a supportive role, as well to occasionally develop and/or lead portions of a program, small groups, or tablings. Depending on their skills and interests, the intern may have opportunities to support special projects such as volunteer recruitment or creating outreach materials.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated and organized. It is optimal, though not required, for the intern to have their own car to navigate to sites. Experience with Salesforce is a plus. The internship is paid at a rate of $17.80 per hour, not to exceed a total of 240 hours over the course of the internship.
By the end of the internship our Education Intern will have gained experience in program preparation, design, and implementation, as well as classroom management and adult engagement strategies. The intern will gain valuable insight into the day-to-day work of an environmental educator. By supporting Canopy’s integrated programs, our interns also gain valuable exposure to urban forestry and arboriculture concepts, as well as to environmental nonprofit programs and operations. This position is ideal for those looking to explore their own interests in diverse career paths in education by working with a variety of ages and educational delivery models.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In partnership with the Education Director, K-12 Environmental Educator, and Adult Education Coordinator, the Education Intern will:
1) As schedule allows, attend K-12 and Adult Education programs in a supportive role.
2) Support the organization and preparation of lesson and program materials.
3) Support communication with program participants or partners.
4) Support record-keeping.
5) With the support of the Education team, lead special projects to create and deliver new
educational content or support volunteer management.
6) Complete other responsibilities as needed.
Required Qualifications:
1. Experience and/or interest in education, particularly environmental education.
2. Experience working with youth in PreK - 12.
3. Experience working with members of the public with diverse backgrounds.
4. Able to support an inclusive and culturally relevant learning environment.
5. Flexible self-starter and motivated independent worker.
6. Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
8. Works well with a team.
9. Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic work environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
2. Experience with accessible media and/or facilitating accessible learning experience
3. Experience with Salesforce.
Physical Activity Requirements
● Ability to sit and type, frequently.
● Ability to bend, squat, stoop, and stand for long periods of time, regularly.
