Located in Santa Barbara, CA
The Outdoor School at Rancho Alegre is looking for a Cook to join our team who loves cooking. The cook’s role is to include preparing and providing quality and nutritional food in support of The Outdoor School at Rancho Alegre and other programs at Rancho Alegre.
This position is responsible for cooking and preparing food using standard recipes and production guidelines while following food safety, food handing, and sanitation procedures. The individual in this role should safely handle knives and equipment including grills, fryers, ovens, broilers, etc.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- · Cooks and prepares food following production guidelines and standardized recipes and other job-related duties as assigned.
- · Sets up workstation with the necessary ingredients and equipment.
- · Prepares ingredients by measuring, weighing, mixing, chipping, trimming, and peeling food items.
- · Safely use all food utensils including knives.
- · Operates equipment such as ovens, stoves, slicers, mixers, etc.
- · Bakes, roasts, broils, steams, and uses a variety of methods on meats, vegetables, and other foods.
- · Arranges, garnishes, and portions food following established guidelines.
- · Properly store food by following food safety policies and procedures.
- · Cleans and sanitizes work areas, equipment, and utensils.
- · Maintains excellent customer service with a positive attitude towards guests, customers, clients, co-workers, etc.
- · Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating on complex dishes.
- · Interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of people, such as waitstaff, dishwashers, management and sometimes customers.
- · Calm demeanor to work in a high-stress, fast paced environment.
- · Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to handle tools, such as knife techniques for chopping, slicing, cutting, and dicing.
- · Ability to stand in one place for hours at a time, handle extreme heat and work shifts.
- · Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Competencies:
Knowledge of: The basic principles of food preparation, various cooking methods, and food safety regulations such as proper food handling, sanitation, and storage.
Skill in: Proficient in all aspects of food preparation; utilizing equipment and tools that pertain to food service; interpreting menus and recipes; adjusting ingredients based on taste; basic math and counting; effective written and verbal interpersonal and communication.
Ability to: work independently with limited supervision; determine and select proper foods and supplies for each meal based on quantities ordered and budget; organize time for execution of meals.
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Qualifications
- · One year of experience as a cook or related role.
- · A Food Handler’s certificate must be obtained within seven days of entry into position.
- · Must pass a criminal history background check.
Compensation
$22.00 per hour. Food and Lodging provided.
