Description:
The City's Recreation and Parks Department is seeking interested applicants willing to work 5-40 hours a week (not to exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year) in various recreation programs. The ideal candidate will be energetic, with strong organizational and communication abilities. A passion for excellence and experience in offering responsible recreational programs in a diverse community are highly sought after. Candidates may be assigned to any of the following program areas: Aquatics, Kiddie Kollege, and Summer Camp. Bilingual applicants are highly desired and encouraged to apply!
Distinguishing Characteristics:
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties within various programs and activities of the Recreation and Parks Department; assists groups and individuals who are engaged in recreational activities and performs other related work as required.
- Recreation Specialist II has greater responsibility for program administration.
Supervision Exercised and Received:
Recreation Specialist II receives limited supervision and exercises general supervision over assigned staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
The following duties are performed in addition to the essential duties performed by Recreation Specialist I:
-Develops and follows ongoing curriculum for programs and activities;
-Supervises multiple program sites; enforces and adheres to all departmental policies and procedures regarding use of City equipment and facilities; inspects facility for maintenance or potential safety issues;
-Orders, inventories and maintains supplies and equipment;
-Conducts tours of various facility locations;
-Maintains applicable records and files (including electronic records) related to programs, activities and department requirements; prepares required reports, financial summaries and personnel documentation;
-Meets with parents and other contacts to determine best practices and resolve conflicts; distributes, collects, tallies and reports on program participant evaluations;
-Accounts for program registration requirements and finances;
-Applies specific knowledge, leadership experience or talent to enhance programs; and

Qualifications:
Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties within various programs and activities of the Recreation and Parks Department; assists groups and individuals who are engaged in recreational activities and performs other related work as required.
- Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED); specialized training in area of assignment.
- Experience: Two years' experience as Recreation Specialist I or equivalent.
Licenses/certifications/other requirements:
-Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to recreation facilities and meetings;
-Must be 18 years of age;
-Must obtain a negative TB test by date of hire; and
-Possession and maintenance of valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
