    About Big City Mountaineers (BCM)

    Big City Mountaineers (BCM) provides free, fully-outfitted outdoor experiences for youth from disinvested communities. Through day trips, overnights, and weeklong backcountry expeditions, we create opportunities for 12 to 18-year-olds to build confidence, resilience, and connection—with nature, themselves, and each other. For over 35 years, BCM has delivered transformative outdoor programs with the support of a dedicated staff, instructors, volunteers, and agency partners. We operate nationally, with regional hubs in Denver, Seattle, the Bay Area, Minneapolis, and Birmingham.

    Position Overview

    The Regional Program Manager (RPM) leads all aspects of BCM programming in the San Francisco Bay Area. This includes overseeing logistics for day trips, overnights, and expeditions, managing partner and volunteer relationships, and ensuring a smooth, safe experience for youth participants.

    The RPM works from a home office and must reside near BCM’s storage unit in Richmond, CA. This is a solo staff position in the region, with local travel for gear prep, food purchasing, and program delivery.

    Key Responsibilities

    Program Delivery & Logistics

    • Manage logistics for all local programs (gear, food, vehicles, scheduling)
    • Oversee gear inventory and coordinate seasonal packing and cleanup
    • Maintain accurate records in Salesforce and other BCM systems

    Stakeholder Communication

    • Build and maintain relationships with Youth Agency Partners, volunteers, and instructors
    • Ensure program expectations, logistics, and safety protocols are clearly communicated
    • Lead local instructor team, including hiring, scheduling, and support

    Risk & Safety Management

    • Review registration and health forms; manage medical/safety protocols
    • Serve as on-call support during field programs
    • Conduct pre- and post-trip briefings with field staff and volunteers

    Qualifications

    • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification required
    • Experience managing outdoor programs, ideally with youth (ages 12–18)
    • Experience working independently with remote supervision
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Clean driving record and reliable transportation
    • Knowledge of Bay Area outdoor spaces (e.g. Marin Headlands, Point Reyes, Desolation Wilderness) a plus
    • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM systems a plus
    • Ability to lift and move program gear (up to 50 lbs)

    Location Requirements

    Must live within reasonable travel distance to Richmond, CA. Regional travel is expected (van pickups, food supply runs, local partner meetings, etc.).

    Compensation & Benefits

    • Salary: $69,000/year (exempt, full-time)
