Paid Intern Naturalist ~ Fall 2025
Location: Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, 2777 Middle Harbor Rd. Oakland, CA 94607
Position Eligibility & Description: College students are eligible for a paid Intern Naturalist position to assist with Naturalist programs at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (MHSP) in Oakland, CA. Interns work under the direction of the Executive Director and/or Program Director. Fall 2025 Internships begin September 4 and end on November 20, 2025. Up to two students per season will be eligible for this paid internship. Bilingual (Spanish-English), Peralta Community College (Merritt, Laney) students and former Oakland Uniied School District students are especially encouraged to apply.
Scope of Work, Schedule & Pay Rate:
● Intern Naturalists receive initial safety and orientation training at MHSP; dates to be determined (probably Thursday 9/4/25 for new staff only @ 8:45 - 12:45), Thursday 9/11/25, Tuesday 9/16/25, &/or Thursday 9/18/25 (for all staff, 8:45 -
3 pm) (est. 15-18 hrs)
● Interns assist with a public event California Coastal Cleanup Day (aka Oakland Creek to Bay Day) on Saturday 9/20/25 from 7:30am to 1:30pm (est. 6 hours)
● Intern Naturalists will co-lead outdoor natural science and cultural history activities
for groups of 10 – 20, mostly 1st-5th graders at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (MHSP).
Naturalist programs occur most Thursday mornings, from 8:45am-12:45pm on the
following dates: 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20 + 1 hour of prep time to read curriculum for each Field Trip date. (est. 45 hours)
●Potential for additional hours to observe and assist Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) through Zoom to school classrooms (on Monday or Tuesday mornings). (est. 3 hours)
● Intern Naturalists may assist in preparation or distribution of instructional and outreach materials. (est. 4 hours)
●Participate in evaluation of own progress and of the overall program. (est 2 hrs)
● Intern Naturalists conduct other related activities as assigned by the Executive Director or Program Director.
● An estimate of 75-78 hrs of work paid on an hourly rate of $20.00+/hr.
Desired* & Required Qualifications:
● Interest in working with Elementary - High School students in outdoor setting
● Interest &/or knowledge of ecology of San Francisco Bay flora & fauna
● Zoom presentation and Google Slide Deck presentation skills*
● Social Media and photography skills*
● Must pass a fingerprint background check (reimbursed by Nurture NATURE).
● Ability to see, hear, stand, walk on varying terrain (steps, sandy beach, uneven dirt paths, 1-2 miles) & lift/carry up to 30 pounds of gear and equipment.
