Sierra Outdoor School (SOS), part of Clovis Unified School District (CUSD), provides hands-on outdoor education that fosters scientific curiosity, environmental stewardship, and leadership development. Naturalists engage students through inquiry-based instruction, adventure-based learning, and mentorship of interns and new staff while ensuring a safe and enriching educational experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Teach California Natural History, Environmental Science, Conservation, and Social History, including the Gold Rush and its impact on Indigenous communities.
Develop and deliver hands-on, inquiry-based lessons aligned with NGSS (Next
Generation Science Standards), California’s EP&Cs (Environmental Principles and Concepts), and California 4th grade history or any other curriculum adopted by the District.
Use experiential learning methods to engage diverse student populations in outdoor science and leadership education.
Facilitate team-building and leadership activities, promoting social-emotional learning, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Lead high and low ropes challenge course activities, deliver instruction, and ensure student safety and skill development.
Responsible for proper care and maintenance of equipment, setup, take down and storage of equipment, conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and course maintenance following the Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) guidelines.
Guide students in hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, and outdoor adventure programs, emphasizing personal growth and environmental responsibility.
Support the Raptor Center program, ensuring the care, well-being, and ethical handling of non-releasable birds of prey.
Lead wildlife conservation programs, educating students on raptor ecology, adaptations, and conservation efforts.
Ensure compliance with state and federal wildlife care regulations.
Mentor and train Naturalist Interns and newly hired staff, fostering their growth and confidence in environmental education.
May assist in staff training workshops on best practices in outdoor education, challenge course facilitation, and risk management.
Serve as a positive role model, promoting respect for nature, leadership, and environmental responsibility.
Assist in emergency preparedness by participating in safety briefings and supporting emergency response drills.
Ensure student and staff safety during scheduled programs.
Conduct orientation sessions for students, teachers, and chaperones, ensuring a positive and well-organized learning experience.
Manage and update the program’s website and social media platforms to enhance communication and outreach.
Drive school buses and District vehicles to transport students and other items to support the operation of Sierra Outdoor School.
Maintain community relations with school partners such as Clovis Unified School District, Tuolumne Band of Miwok Indians, California State Parks, visiting Schools, and other partners of Sierra Outdoor School
